Violent Witness: Mob Attacks Crash Driver

A motorist had to be rescued from an angry mob in central China when he hit a child who ran into the road after witnesses thought he'd reversed to finish off the stricken youngster.

Driver Zhang Lin leapt out of the car after colliding with the six-year-old in Zhengzhou, Henan province, and saw the badly injured lad was trapped under the wheels of his car.

But when he reversed off the boy's body, angry passers-by thought he was trying to kill him by running him over again.

"Within a very short time a large mob had gathered who were intent of attacking Mr Zhang.

"Many mistakenly thought that he had reversed over the child to make sure he was dead and could not give evidence against him.

"In fact, he was trying to save the child's life.

"But if we had not intervened, Mr Zhang would have been very seriously injured, perhaps worse," said a police spokesman.

The youngster died later from severe internal injuries.

Police eventually broke up the mob and were able to escort the driver to safety.

"The driver was not responsible for the accident. The boy ran out after a ball without looking," explained one officer.
