Dog Gone - Canine Bounty Hunter Business Booming in Russia

Animal lovers have slammed the growing number of bounty hunters going out on patrol to kill stray dogs in cities like Moscow and Novosibirsk,

The latest placed to offer the bounty for dead dogs is Gorno-Altaisk, the capital of Russia's Altai Republic but hopes the bounty of 3 GBP per dog being offered will help them to cut down on the number of strays.

The cash offer has lead to vigilante gangs being set up who have been not only catching stray dogs but also snaring pets – sometimes even grabbing guard dogs from gardens in Gorno-Altaisk.

Officials however have refused to back down but have said that in future only dogs from bounty hunters who are accompanied by a policeman will be accepted – and they are also getting a vet to check the body to see that the animal was humanely killed.

A spokesman said: "We don't want people bringing in random dead dogs that they might have just found and we also don't want dogs that have been poisoned. They have to have been killed using one of the approved methods."
