Ill Wind

Skiers had a lucky escape when a chair lift was caught by a gust of wind and slammed into a mast in the Swiss ski resort of Adelboden.

An automatic brake on the lift kicked in stopping the chairlift in its tracks before any serious damage could be done - but it was a shock for the skiers being ferried up the mountain on the other side.

Luckily no skiers were in the chair that was damaged as it was on the side going down the mountain and therefore empty. Only the other side talking skiers up the mountain was occupied.

Skier Markus Fischer, 37, who was stuck in the lift when it came to a standstill said: "We were getting information on the speakers but could not hear a word because of the loud wind."

After half an hour the lift was fixed and the rest of the skiers could be freed from the lift when it restarted - and were given a free hot drink at the top.

The lifts were then put out of use as a precautionary measure until the high winds died down.
