Gold Diggers

Sick crematorium workers in Hamburg, Germany, are being quizzed by police after claims that they looted the gold fillings from the teeth of bodies waiting to be incinerated.

The wife of one worker - who is facing 68 theft charges - is said to have made nearly 250,000 GBP from selling 25.5 kilos of gold from the scam, which is alleged to have gone on for years.

Another wife - now dead herself - is understood to have pocketed 180,000 GBP from the grave robbing.

Eight crematorium workers are being investigated by police and prosecutors.

For Germany, the case has chilling echoes of the Nazi era death camps where the bodies of Jewish prisoners were butchered for their gold fillings.

Public prosecutor spokesman Wilhelm Mollers said: "The eight workers are alleged to have stolen gold from fillings from the remains."

Officials began the investigation when they realised the amount of gold found in ashes at the crematorium was much lower than at other sites.

"We set up hidden cameras and caught people in the act. It's obviously been going on for years," said one.
