Angry bus passengers rebelled against police when armed officers allowed a woman to frisk them after she claimed her mobile phone had been stolen.
Haung Lu held up other passengers on the bus in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, southern China, for 30 minutes while she searched them for her missing handset.
"I'd answered my phone on the bus but when I tried to use it again it had gone," said Huang.
"I knew the thief was another passenger because we hadn't made a stop so I asked the driver to call the police," she added.
Police finally let the bus move on when angry passengers said a civilian had no right to search them.
But unrepentant Huang said: "I was a victim of crime and they let the crook get away."
A police spokesman added: "There was a search supervised by officers but we had to cut it short as there were concerns about public disorder."
