Elk and Safety

A terrified dog walker has told how he punched a rampaging elk on the nose to escape when the 500lbs beast charged him during a trip to a forest.

Jan Akesson stumbled across the seven feet long elk and her two calves as he walked with his two Jack Russell terriers in woods near his home in Skipas, western Sweden.

"I heard something behind my back and there it was - an elk mother with her two calves, just ten metres away.

"I panicked and started to run, but she came after me. Somehow, I managed to punch her in the nose and she fled- but not for long," he said.

Akesson said he had to outrun the elk when it charged again when he went back to rescue his two dogs.

Now he's demanding that police destroy the rampant reindeer because she's a "menace" to forest walkers.

But one expert said: "He stumbled across a mother who was defending her calves. She did what any mother would do."
