Church leaders are suing a homeowner in Nafels, Switzerland, for failing to live up to a 600-year-old agreement with a 14th century murderer so he could avoid the death sentence.
Knight Konrad Muller had promised to provide oil for the church's lights from his estate "in perpetuity" after clerics spared his life in 1357.
The nobleman had killed another man who he accused of stealing a horse.
Now church leaders have issued a writ against the current owner of the estate, who has refused to pay the 50 GBP bill.
"The estate bought its owner the right to eternal life in return for an eternal bill," said a spokesman.
They added. "We accept that the new owner is not a relative of the guilty man but he knew about the debt when he bought the property and he has to honour the promise."
