Pippi Longstocking Killer

A 37-year-old man who slayed a dog walker with an axe in a picture-postcard town made famous by Sweden's Pippi Longstocking author has been arrested by police.

The killer - carrying a drum and an axe - attacked his 81-year-old victim just a few yards from his home near remote Bullerbyn, the idyllic village used by writer Astrid Lindgren in her books.

Police later found the axeman hiding at an isolated woodland cabin after tracking him with sniffer dogs.

A witness who'd tried to stop the attack told police that the killer had smashed his windscreen before finishing off his victim.

Villager Peter Rydfjall, 43, said: "This is a small place and everyone knows everyone else."

"It feels safe to live here, but it isn't Bullerbyn any more, and if there is a lone lunatic stalking the village there is little you can do to protect yourself," he added.
