DIY Plane Builders Manslaughter Warning After Wings Fell Off

A group of students could face manslaughter charges after building a plane that crashed leaving two people dead when the wings fell off in western Sweden last week.

The Zenair CH 701 was built by high school students working on a vocational project but they never bothered to finish it - and it was sold to a flying club for 10,000 GBP who finished the project themselves.

"When we examined the wreckage we discovered that the construction of the wing-spar was missing three bolts that were supposed to be steel," investigator Staffan Ekström of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) told the Hallands Nyheter newspaper.

"They were replaced with aluminium rivets. These were simply not strong enough to do the job of holding the wings in place."

Eye witnesses said the plane had simply dropped out of the sky when the wing fell off as it came into land at an airstrip in Arvika.
