Chip Strop

Chippy concept artist Stefan Bohnenberger has been awarded 2,000 GBP by a judge after a gallery lost two French fries he said were an essential part of one of his works.

The modern sculpture shows four chips formed into two crosses, with two fries gilded with gold leaf and the other pair left plain.

Now the Mosel and Tschechow gallery in Munich, Germany, has been ordered to compensate the artist after admitting it had lost the two plain chips after a recent exhibition.

Judges found that the gallery had neglected its duty to keep the chips safe.

Gallery owner Andrea Tschechow had denied that the chips - featured in the 1990 work 'Pommes d'Or' - were art.

"There were crosses made of fries that were meant to be artworks, but not this one. This one was just the model for the golden cross," she said.

But a collector told the court she would have paid 2,500 GBP for the stale fries, giving them artistic value, the court decided.

Court spokesman Wilhelm Schneider said: "The artist received damages because the lost objects have an economic value."
