Two Thirds Of Moldovan Young Women In Prostitution
Poverty is so severe in Europe's poorest country that more than two out of every three young women in Moldova has at some stage worked as a prostitute.
According to the research published by the Scelles Foundation, a French NGO fighting human trafficking, 70 percent of Moldovan women aged 15-25 had prostituted themselves at least once.
According to the Scelles Foundation’s international report on sexual exploitation, there are some to 42 million prostitutes worldwide, most of them in China, India and Brazil.
It added: "Prostitution has become one of the most alarming growing business, reaching some 42 million prostitutes, of which 90 percent are exploited by a human traffickers."
The main reasons women go into prostitution are poverty, wars and family issues.
The organized crime rings are the main beneficiaries of prostitution services, with profits estimated to some 27.8 billion USD.
Moldova is one of the poorest nations in Europe, with almost 30 percent living on poverty threshold (USD 4.3 per day per person).
