A patient in an intensive care unit  burned a hospital to the ground when he blew up an oxygen cylinder trying to light a cigarette.

The smoker - desperately ill in an oxygen tent - accidentally ignited the tank with a spark from his lighter at the hospital in Miedzyrzecz, Poland.

Visitor Dawid Rosolak, 22, said: "I was walking past intensive care and I heard a massive explosion and this terrible scream.

"I ran over and saw a man lying on the floor and then the whole room began to fill with black smoke."

Fire brigade spokesman Szymon Winnicki explained: "The concentration of acrid smoke was so great that, were it not for the quick-thinking actions of the medical staff, the patients might all have suffocated."

Hospital staff say the smoker survived the blast but is severely injured and has been moved to another intensive care unit in a burns clinic.
