A pet cat died of thirst after it was locked in a railway station luggage locker for five days, say police in Hamburg, Germany.

Commuters first reported hearing its desperate mewing on Saturday but they were ignored by station staff and the cat's body was only found on Wednesday by cleaners.

Police believe the tabby had been locked in on Friday without any food or water - and had died of dehydration after a few days.
