Holy Mary and baby Hitler

An Italian painter outraged the faithful in Pietrasanta, northern Italy, when he advertised his show by covering the town with posters of a painting that shows the Virgin Mary with a baby Hitler in her arms. The painter Giuseppe Veneziano is to unveil his show - called 'Zeitgeist' - on 17th July which includes his painting 'Third Reich Holy Mary'. But the show might be closed before its début after the furious priest in Pietrasanta, father Stefano D'Atri, asked the mayor Domenico Lombardi to cancel it. He said: "That painting offend us as faithful and as people who lived during the terrible period of Nazism. We don't hide behind art." But painter Veneziano claimed: "If art cannot provoke, what can it do?" The mayor Lombardi meanwhile has apologised saying: "I take full responsibility for this problem. I'd never seen it before I approved it otherwise I would have chose another painter for this exhibition slot."

hello this is Claudio Francesconi, i own the gallery that produced the exhibition Zeitgeist with the artist Giuseppe Veneziano. I need to say that the meaning of the painting and the choice to use it as main banner of the exhibition was not actually to make an easy provocation. I consider the painting a great interpretation of last century and i can see behind the colors a peace message: Everybody is God's son... everybody has a mother and a father... even Adolf Hitler had. The good and the evil belong both to human being... Whether you believe in God - then God created everything and everyone. This is the meaning of the painting, i hope you all apreciate that. My gallery is been very proud to present this artist; we often afford difficult topics: for example we made few months ago a nice exhibition against homophobia from the artist Dorian X. You can check it in our gallery site: http://www.gestaltgallery.it/?q=image/tid/30 best regards from italy
