The cubs presumably possess the genes of Berber lions, a breed that has been exterminated in the wild.

Vienna zoo lion cubs are frolicing in the autumn sun

Vienna zoo’s three lion cubs are now three months old, enjoying frolicing in the bright autumn sunshine.

The cubs presumably possess the genes of Berber lions, a breed that has been exterminated in the wild. Their mother from Olomouc Zoo in the Czech Republic has features typical of Berber lions, one of which is an exceptionally-thick mane. There are reportedly only a few lions in the world that have Berber lion genes. The last Berber lion was killed in 1922 in Morocco.

Zoo personnel estimate that the lion cubs weigh around seven to eight kilos each. It is assumed that two are male and one is female since it has been impossible to examine them closely.

Everyone who wants to get a glimpse of the bunch playing outside has the best chance to do so in the afternoon.
