Vienna hopes to build the highest Lego tower in history on the square behind city hall to get an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
The building of the tower on the occasion of the "100 Years of Friends of Children" festival on the square will run until Sunday, when it is hoped that the tower will reach a height of 30 meters. The present world record of 29.26 meters was set last May in Great Britain.
A crane will have to be used for the building of the highest part of the tower, but it cannot be used if wind speed exceeds 30 kilometers an hour. Wind gusts of up to 60 kilometers an hour are forecast for Saturday, so it may be impossible to adhere to the schedule.
Hundreds of children will help put the Lego blocks together during the next four days. They will use enough to them to make the tower weigh around 1.5 tonnes upon completion. As soon as a new world record has been certified, the tower will be dismantled.
