Rex with co-star Kaspar Capparoni

Canine crime-stopper Rex returns to Vienna

By Elyse Franko

The cast and crew of hit TV series ‘Kommissar Rex’ have returned to Vienna to film the show's 10th season.

After filming seven episodes in Rome, the crime-busting German Shepherd and his human counterpart, Italian actor Kaspar Capparoni, have come back to sniff out criminals in the Austrian capital.

Watched by his trainer and a number of journalists, Rex - whose off-screen name is Henry - visited Vienna's SPÖ Mayor Michael Häupl. The Mayor lauded the hit series for spreading a positive image of Vienna, denying that the show might give the city a reputation for high crime.

"After all, no one confuses Venice with Donna Leon crime novels," Häupl said.

The first eight seasons of ‘Kommissar Rex’ were filmed between 1994 and 2004 in Vienna and gained great popularity throughout Europe and Australia, where the series is known as "Inspector Rex". Most of the ninth season was filmed in Rome in 2007, but the show's broadcaster, ORF, confirmed in May that the 10th season would be shot in Vienna.

The show's ninth season airs on ORF in the autumn.
