Plane crash in Lower Austria claims pilot and co-pilot

By Thomas Hochwarter

Two people died when a small plane crashed into a forest near Lindgrub, Lower Austria, yesterday (Sat).

Authorities said the pilot and co-pilot must have died instantly.

Fire brigade operation leader Andreas Pinkl said: "We found parts of the plane in a perimeter of 100 square-metres. There was nothing we could do."

The men set off from Wiener Neustadt airport for a sightseeing flight.

Officials said they have not clarified the co-pilot’s identity yet, adding that the pilot was a 42-year-old man from Vienna.

Eyewitnesses said they heard that the plane’s engine had several failures before coming on again. Weather-connected problems were ruled out as the reason as conditions were fair when the accident occurred.
