Some 20,000 Austrian students from 140 schools are expected to participate in "Run Miracle 09" on Thursday to raise money for the needy.
Parents, teachers and friends will also be able to participate in the event organised by youngCaritas.at
The farther the students run, the more money will be contributed. Roman Catholic charity Caritas has said the students themselves are deciding who should receive it.
Some 2,500 students in Dornbirn and Feldkirch, Vorarlberg will run on Thursday for needy kids in Africa, and 1,000 in Tyrol will run on behalf of a children’s and health project in Kosovo, the kids project "Taka Tuka" and an Aids orphans’ project in Burkina Faso in Africa.
Another 3,000 students from Klagenfurt, Wolfsberg, Villach, Feldkirchen, Dellach/Drau and Trebesing in Carinthia will participate in the event, accompanied by former Austrian ace runner Steffi Graf.
Some 1,200 students will take part in Salzburg, and 6,000 in Upper Austria, as well as 900 in Lower Austria and 1,500 in Burgenland.
In Vienna, 2,500 students will run on behalf of street children in Ukraine. Graz students already raced on 19 May to raise money for a babies’ nutrition centre in Sudan, and 360 of them will run again on Thursday to help an Aids orphans project in Tanzania.
