French heartthrob Alain Delon has admitted to regret that he did not marry Austrian movie legend Romy Schneider.
The 73-year-old actor made this statement in an interview with a French paper. He added: "But I would not have wanted to see her aged 70."
Delon, one of France’s greatest actors of all time, starred in several movies together with Schneider, who would have turned 70 last year had she been alive.
Delon and Schneider became engaged in 1959 but split up four years later.
Speaking to French newspaper La Provence, Delon revealed: "I took three pictures of her on her death bed that I always carry with me. I have not shown the pictures to anyone else."
Vienna-born Schneider rose to worldwide fame in the 1950s with the romantic biopic trilogy "Sissi". Less stereotypical films at her peak of fame included "Monpti" and "Swimming Pool". But it seems the hype about her personality is as strong as ever.
A charm bracelet once owned by Schneider, who was found dead in her Paris apartment on 29 May 1982, went under the hammer in Vienna last year for the sensational sum of 29,600 Euros. A fan who had travelled to Vienna from Germany made the highest bid for the jewellery.
The Österreichische Filmgalerie (Austrian Film Gallery) in Krems, Lower Austria, will commemorate Schneider this year with a six-month exhibit running from 26 April to 1 November.
