Disappearing tree mystery solved

Authorities claim to have solved the mystery of a tree that disappeared into a five-metre hole at Vienna’s Ringstraße.

MA 29 magistrate officials said today (Thurs) the poplar plunged into the ground as subsoil was weakened by the rotting remains of trees felled and then used in the foundations of the road more than a century ago.

The incident had left experts puzzled for days and the area where the tree dropped into the ground had to be closed off and tram traffic diverted as an investigation was carried out.
