Turtles saved from blaze get oxygen
Four tortoises had to be given oxygen treatment after a fire broke out at their roofed enclosure yesterday (Mon).
Keepers at the Pöstlingberg Zoo in Linz, Upper Austria, said today they decided to put breathing masks connected to oxygen machines – created for human victims of blazes – on the African Spurred Tortoises after rescuing them from the flames.
Vet Isabella Eberle explained: "They soon started trying to get the masks off – which was a good sign."
The 60-kilo turtles, who suffered severe smoke inhalation, also received infusions. They are expected to make a full recovery while the two Black Crowned Cranes – who were also kept at the 30-square-metre wooden hut – died in the flames.
Fire-fighter Klaus Thallinger said a defunct lamp probably caused the blaze.
