Vienna underground 'safe' despite building collapse

Wiener Linien bosses have pledged public transport is still safe after a house built just metres above an underground line collapsed at the weekend.

Officials at the Viennese public transport agency said today (Mon) they were still forced to slow speeds down to a maximum 25 kilometres per hour on the U3 line after Saturday’s dramatic incident.

The Penzing district housing estate which broke down for unclear reasons was built around three metres above the busy U-Bahn’s tunnel.

Wiener Linien officials explained they must await further examination results before reintroducing normal speeds on the route.

No one was injured when the two-storey block collapsed two days ago, and experts are currently trying to find out whether a building excavation not far from the estate triggered the incident.
