And inventor Li Han says she's netting a fortune from the idea, growing self-sufficient air plants on a supporting mesh.
The plants - which simply suck moisture and nutrients from the air - not only filter light but also rid the air of impurities, says Han, from China's capital Beijing.
"They smell fresh all the time, they never need to be washed or cleaned and they are ideal for people concerned about the environment," she explained.
