Bamboozled

A Chinese teenager who was ambushed by two men who pierced his eye with a sharp bamboo stave is recovering in hospital.

Zhou Pinghai, 19, of Quanzhou, southern China, has woken up in the hospital after two days in a coma.

Zhou said he had gone out for dinner with a friend and was ambushed as he went home by two men.

"I don't know why those two people attacked me," he said.

"If it had gone a few centimetres the other way, the bamboo would have gone through his left eyeball," said Doctor Yang of Southeast Hospital.

The stick went into his head above the left eyeball, and didn't stop until reaching the brain stem.

Doctors said Zhou is lucky to have survived. Police are investigating the case.
