Snow joke as hotel offers ice block beds

This hotel Maso Corto mountain lodge may look normal but in fact everything is inside out after the owner filled some of the rooms with snow and used it to mould beds for a Valentine's night to remember.

Located 2,850 metres (9,350 feet) above sea level alongside the Val Senales glacier in the Italian Alps, it also has a steam bath and an open air hot water pool despite the fact temperatures routinely plunge to minus 20.

Manager Arnold Malferteiner said: "We thought it would be romantic for couples looking for something a bit different for Valentine's Day.

"And in addition, although the beds are frozen and even the walls are of snow - we hope that the fact they are covered in sheepskin mattresses will help. The heating of course has to be provided by the couple themselves."

He added: "This is an idea for couples who have already tried almost everything and really want something different."

The offer includes a helicopter trip to the nearest peak for a high-altitude wine-tasting and a champagne drink in the open-air bath tub.
